Entanglement. A Corporeal Perspective. Toña Vegas. MIFA Miami. February 2026

I wrote this text while reflecting on my experience of creating this body of work during the 2020 quarantine, a period defined by global uncertainty and collective vulnerability. Six years later, similar conditions of instability persist, now intensified by paradoxical political and social dynamics. Amid this turbulence, art offers a space for meditation: a broader place to contemplate the complexity and interconnections revealed by the moment we are living, to formulate different questions…

From a tiny place of silence in a corner of my bedroom, I created this body of work. At home, I had a few watercolor tubes, some brushes, and a small translucent paper pad. I began to apply soft layers of watercolor while consciously breathing, creating an intangible silent space around me. In the course of days, driven not by thoughts but by a fundamental force, the space opened into an unknown interior landscape to explore. I let that force take the lead, working in a highly intuitive and even instinctual manner, not knowing where it would take me. The translucency of the paper and the pigments were in tune with the delicate atmosphere.

I tend to work in cycles, always intrigued by the process. What began as a subtle expression, unfolded into a series of works that grew in size and intensity. Soon enough a need for density and corporeality came forth and with it a powerful impulse to move my body rhythmically as I applied gestural strokes on the paper. The action of painting felt like a performance or a ritual. The layers of watercolor became progressively more textured and embodied. The size of the works increased as did the color palette. Associations with cosmic and telluric energies as well as with the work of admired artists as El Greco and the Cave Painters came through. A strong corporeal work emerged from the translucent and silent space of the beginning. Entanglement is the title of the whole series.
